Setup the Google Drive Connection

Alteryx makes it easy to read / output your data directly to Google Drive, to make data quickly and easily available for others who use these tools. This page shows screenshots from the Google Drive Input Tool, but a similar process will apply for Google Drive Output tool as well.

For easier viewing, type the letter r or select “Presenter Mode” from the menu in the upper-right corner of the page.

Before you begin

  1. Make sure your version of Alteryx Designer matches our Server version, which is

    . You can always download the recommended matching version at this link.

  2. Install Tools from Alteryx Marketplace: The OneDrive and SharePoint Tools do not come out-of-the-box with Alteryx. (see this link for more guiadance on how to install) Add-Ons. Make sure that your version matches the version on Alteryx Server (listed here).

  3. Be sure your account is set up on Alteryx Server (to test this, login to https://alteryx.pitt.edu/gallery/ using your Pitt SSO credentials). If you do not yet have an account, submit a Help Desk ticket here to get added. Include in your request that you have a Designer license and plan to publish workflows to Alteryx Server.

  4. Be sure to Enable Data Connection Manager (DCM) Settings in Alteryx Designer.

Log-on to Alteryx Server

Before setting up a connection, make sure you are connected to Alteryx Server. To do this, navigate to: File>>Open Workflow>>My Company’s Gallery.

If you do not yet have your gallery set up, navigate to File>>Open Workflow>>Add New Server, and then enter https://analytics.pitt.edu/gallery/ as the URL (as shown on the screenshot on the right above).

In the next window, login using your Pitt credentials:

After your login completes, a new window should pop-up with any workflows that you may have saved to Alteryx Server. You can close this window, as the login process is now complete.

Create a Data Source and Setup your Credentials

  1. To start creating a new credential, drag one of the tools (OneDrive Input/Output or SharePoint Input/Output) onto the Canvas. With the tile in the Canvas Selected, you should see a menu like the one shown here. Click on the ‘Setup Connection Button’.

  1. In the “Input Data” Configuration window, make sure that the “Use Data Manager (DCM)” box is checked, and then click on Setup a Connection.

  1. In the Data connections box that appears, select “Data sources” from the pane on the left, and the scroll down to Google Drive and select “Quick Connect” (as shown to the right).

There may be a pause while the Google Drive tool is loaded.

  1. Once the Google Drive tool is loaded, click the blue “Setup Connection” button on the screen.

  1. In the next screen, click “New” to create a new connection.

  1. Name your new data source whatever you want (but remember this name, as you’ll need to refer back to it later!)

  1. Set up the connection as shown to the right - make sure the Authentication Method is set to Custom App and the box for Allow connection for SDK is checked. You can view the Client Id and Secret here.

  1. In the next Window, click on the Connect button. A browser window should open and prompt you to connect to your Google Account.

  1. Once you complete your connecting, you should see a view like the one shown here and you should be able to navigate to your Google Drive (or to files shared with you via Google Drive).

Sync Connection with Alteryx Server

  1. Once you have created the credential, click on the “Synchronize” button on the left menu. On the next screen, select “My Company’s Gallery”

On the next screen, you should see the Data Source, Credential, and Connection you’ve just created. Click the blue “Synchronize” button to sync with Alteryx Server.

On the next screen, your connection should be confirmed.

Share your Connection with the Alteryx Account

  1. Make sure to share your DCM connection on Alteryx Server. To do this, open Alteryx Server Gallery in a new browser window. Then, Select DCM Data Sources along the left panel, and select the name of a data source that you are using.

  1. With the Data Source open, click on the three dots on the right side of the screen (next to the Credential that you’re using) and select ‘Share’ from the menu that follows.

  1. In the window that pops up, select the Groups tab to grant access to a specified group.

  1. Then Search for the Alteryx Server Admins group. You may Share for Collaboration (this will make it easier for our team to troubleshoot issues if they arise) but you must check at least the “Share to Run on Server Only” option.

  1. Once you’ve shared, the window should look like this:

Test your workflow on Alteryx Server

Once you have completed the steps for creating your data source, save the Data source to Alteryx Server by selecting File >> Save As >> Alteryx Server >> My Company’s Gallery.

On the window that pops up (like the one to the right), name your Alteryx Workflow and click save.

Once the Workflow is saved, you should see a Window like the one to the right. Click on the “View in Browser” button in the middle of the window to automatically open this workflow on Alteryx Server.

Once you’ve opened the workflow on Alteryx Server, you can click “Run” in the upper-right portion of the screen, to test whether the workflow works (recommended), or click the “Schedule” button to set up a schedule to run the workflow.
