How to unmerge cells in Tableau dashboard

Oftentimes when you download a Tableau report in Excel, it will merge cells. This is the normal Excel behavior. In the example below it’s happening because some students have multiple Academic Plans:

There are two ways to avoid the work of manually unmerging the cells:

  1. Preferred Method: you can download the report as CSV

  1. Second method will required modification of your dashboard. If it's a report that you created, you can modify the report to force it to display every cell of every record. 

  • double click on the Rows - it will add a place for a new field. 

  • type in INDEX()

  • change the field to discrete

  • drag it to be the first field:

  • hide this field (which is a count of your rows) by unchecking Show Header

  • save your dashboard.
