Transitioning Tableau from an Automation Account (AA Account) to an Automation Token
Snowflake is deprecating the authentication mechanism used for Automation Accounts (AA_). Users must migrate to the use of automation (programmatic access) tokens before August 2026.
Snowflake is deprecating the username mechanism used by the Automation Accounts (AA_). You’ll need to transition your Tableau, Alteryx, or other data movement to use an Automation token. Learn how to create an automation token. Automation tokens are used in conjunction with your full Pitt username + ‘@pitt.edu’. Automation tokens are generated by Snowflake and can be entered in the password field.
Converting a Tableau Workbook Connected to an Enterprise Tableau Data Source
If you have a Tableau workbook you created to extend access to others in your area, and it is connected to a published data source on the Tableau server using your AA_ credentials, follow the steps below to migrate to using your automation token.
Open your workbook in Tableau Desktop
Locate the Data Source, right click on it, and select Create Local Copy. In the window that pops-up, save your data source to any temporary location (you won’t need it once you’ve published your report to Tableau Server)
When the data source has been replicated, click on the original data source, and select Replace Data Source. Select the data source that you have downloaded locally to replace the existing one.
When prompted, select “Edit Connection” in the upper-right corner, and then enter <USERNAME>@pitt.edu in the User field and the PAT in the Password field.
After the swap is complete, the blue check should be next to the database symbol. At this point, you should be able to right-click and close the Tableau data source.
Republish the dashboard by selecting Server > Publish Tableau Workbook… from the menu bar. In the box that pops up, be sure to embed password in the Data Sources section and click Publish. You may be prompted to re-enter your credentials. If so, use your Pitt email address for the username, and the automation token as the password.
