Cognos to Tableau Transition

The Game Plan

Cognos Packages will continue to be supported by Pitt IT until the comparable Tableau data source has been fully released and in use. We will begin incrementally retiring packages throughout FY 2025.

Pitt IT held focus groups about each Cognos Package (e.g., Class schedule, Active Student). Staff who run reports using that Cognos Package were invited to participate in a first focus group to gather requirements for the Tableau Server Dashboards to replace that Cognos Package. Pitt IT developed the dashboards and invited focus group users to try out the dashboards. Several enterprise dashboards have been released to date (see the Tableau Dashboard Catalog).

Users will be able to edit and save the dashboards to meet the needs of their units. The ability to make these edits will require no high-level technical skills and Pitt IT will provide the necessary training. In addition, excel downloads will be supported, so it will be easy to export excel spreadsheets.
