How to Create, Save, and Open a Custom View in Tableau

When you open a dashboard for the first time, the state of the dashboard is based on filters and settings set up by the dashboard owner or publisher. However, you can save view settings to one or more custom views, and even change your default view to one with customized filters and settings.

Create and Save a Custom View in Tableau

  1. Open the dashboard that you want to customize.

  2. Apply filters and view settings (this may be using drop-down menus, or selecting certain elements on the page).

  3. Choose View: Original in the toolbar. (The asterisk (*) next to the icon indicates that you have changed something from the initially loaded view. Note that if you are viewing a custom view, then the name of that view will appear instead of Original.)

  4. In the Custom Views dialog, enter a name for the Custom View.

  5. Choose Make visible to others if you’d like to share it with others. Choose Make it my default if you want to land on this version every time you open the dashboard.

  6. Click the Save button.

  7. If you would like to save different versions (i.e., that apply different filtered values or customizations), you may repeat this process. Note that the last view selected with the Make it my default checkbox will become your default view.

How to Open a Tableau Custom View

If you’ve selected Make it my default in the Custom View dialog box, then you do not need to do anything differently. The next time you open the selected dashboard (either through the URL link or by navigating to the dashboard on Tableau Server), the custom view that you’ve named should load for you. You can check this by checking the name of the view on the upper-right part of the browser window.

(Note: This toolbar is not visible in Full Screen mode. You will need to exit that view to save/open a View.)

If you have not made the view your default, or you want to change to a different Saved View, click on the same View Icon. Your saved views will appear under the My Views heading.

Under Other Views, the Original view is listed. Views that other people have saved and checked Make visible to others will be listed in this area.

Delete or Replace a Tableau Custom View

From the Custom Views dialog box, click on Manage Views in the lower-right part of the screen (left). That will pull up a list of saved views (right), with three icons that (in order, left-to-right): rename the view; delete the view; or toggle to make the view visible/invisible to others.

We do not recommend trying to overwrite a Saved Custom View. Instead, save the view as a new name, and rename or delete old views as desired.
