Pitt IT will hold two focus groups about each Cognos Package (e.g., Class schedule, Active Student). Staff who run reports using that Cognos Package will be invited to participate in a first focus group to gather requirements for the Tableau Server Dashboards to replace that Cognos Package. Once Pitt IT develops the draft dashboards, staff who participated in the first focus group will be invited to try out the dashboards. Then Pitt IT will hold a second focus group discussing the draft dashboards. The dashboards will be accessed via Tableau Server or Tableau Desktop.
Users will be able to edit and save the dashboards to meet the needs of their units. The ability to make these edits will require no high-level technical skills and Pitt IT will provide the necessary training. In addition, excel downloads will be supported, so it will be easy to export excel spreadsheets.
Once the draft dashboards have been modified by Pitt IT after the second focus group, Pitt IT will launch the dashboards more broadly. At this point, Pitt IT will monitor reports being run via Cognos versus Tableau to identify units who need some help in making the transition. Once Pitt IT is confident that no one is running reports from a Cognos Package, that Cognos Package will it be removed.
Pitt IT will proceed with this process through the Cognos Packages iteratively. As a result there is no set date when Cognos will no longer be supported.
