Setup the OneDrive or SharePoint Data Connection

Alteryx makes it easy to read / output your data directly to OneDrive or SharePoint, to make data quickly and easily available for others who use these tools. This page shows screenshots from the OneDrive Input Tool, but a similar process will apply for OneDrive Output and SharePoint Input/Output tools.

For easier viewing, type the letter r or select “Presenter Mode” from the menu in the upper-right corner of the page.

Before you begin

  1. Install Tools from Alteryx Marketplace: The OneDrive and SharePoint Tools do not come out-of-the-box with Alteryx. (see this link for more guiadance on how to install) Add-Ons. Make sure that your version matches the version on Alteryx Server (listed here).

  2. Be sure your account is set up on Alteryx Server (to test this, login to Alteryx Server using your Pitt SSO credentials). If you do not yet have an account, submit a Help Desk ticket here to get added. Include in your request that you have a Designer license and plan to publish workflows to Alteryx Server.

  3. Be sure to Enable Data Connection Manager (DCM) Settings in Alteryx Designer.

Log-on to Alteryx Server

Before setting up a connection, make sure you are connected to Alteryx Server. To do this, navigate to: File>>Open Workflow>>My Company’s Gallery.

If you do not yet have your gallery set up, navigate to File>>Open Workflow>>Add New Server, and then enter https://analytics.pitt.edu/gallery/ as the URL (as shown on the screenshot on the right above).

In the next window, login using your Pitt credentials:

After your login completes, a new window should pop-up with any workflows that you may have saved to Alteryx Server. You can close this window, as the login process is now complete.

Create a Data Source and Setup your Credentials

  1. To start creating a new credential, drag one of the tools (OneDrive Input/Output or SharePoint Input/Output) onto the Canvas. With the tile in the Canvas Selected, you should see a menu like the one shown here. Click on the ‘Setup Connection Button’.

  1. On the next screen, the Technology should be preset to match the Tool that you’re using. In the “Data Source Name”, type a name of the Connection you are creating (so that you can come back to it and reference it again in the future). Click on the Save button in the upper-right corner of the Window.

  1. Once you complete your connecting, you should see a view like the one shown here and you should be able to navigate through your SharePoint / OneDrive location to find the file (or create a new one if you’re writing to the file)

In the window that pops up, select the Groups tab to grant access to a specified group.

Then Search for the Alteryx Server Admins group. You may Share for Collaboration (this will make it easier for our team to troubleshoot issues if they arise) but you must check at least the “Share to Run on Server Only” option.

Once you’ve shared, the window should look like this:

Test your workflow on Alteryx Server

Once you have completed the steps for creating your data source, save the Data source to Alteryx Server by selecting File >> Save As >> Alteryx Server >> My Company’s Gallery.

On the window that pops up (like the one to the right), name your Alteryx Workflow and click save.

Once the Workflow is saved, you should see a Window like the one to the right. Click on the “View in Browser” button in the middle of the window to automatically open this workflow on Alteryx Server.

Once you’ve opened the workflow on Alteryx Server, you can click “Run” in the upper-right portion of the screen, to test whether the workflow works (recommended), or click the “Schedule” button to set up a schedule to run the workflow.
